CM Murad hails German unity as global inspiration, pledges deeper ties

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah lauded the reunification of Germany as a “powerful example of determination, hope, and unity” that transcends divisions, inspiring reconciliation, cooperation, and progress worldwide.

Addressing a gathering at the German Consulate in Karachi on the occasion of German Unity Day, Shah highlighted Germany's long-standing friendship with Sindh and Pakistan, describing the celebration as a reflection of enduring spirit and shared values. He emphasized the critical need for nations to build bridges of cooperation to tackle contemporary global challenges such as climate change and instability.

Recalling the robust ties between Germany and Pakistan since the country’s early years, the Chief Minister noted how this relationship had flourished in Sindh through collaboration in education, renewable energy, vocational training, health, and climate resilience. He specifically acknowledged the contributions of German businesses and development partners based in Karachi, which have enhanced economic and friendly bonds.

Praising Sindh’s tradition of openness and hospitality, Mr. Shah reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Germany, particularly in areas like green growth, youth education, innovation, and sustainable urban development. He extended congratulations to the German people and thanked the hosts for the celebratory occasion.

German Consul General in Karachi, Thomas E. Schultze, said Germany remains the biggest trade partner of Pakistan within the European Union. He noted that many German companies have longstanding relations in Pakistan.

Schultze mentioned that Pakistan and Germany had successfully concluded bilateral negotiations on development cooperation in Islamabad just a week earlier, with Germany pledging €114 million in financial and technical support for 2025–2026.

He said the development package would focus on climate and energy, sustainable economic development, vocational training, and social protection.

He further highlighted that after 1990, the European Union became the second-largest economic power in the world, with a GDP of around US$20 trillion in 2024, encompassing 27 countries forming a common market.

Schultze emphasized that friendship drives economic progress, quoting the German Chancellor on shaping the future with confidence and seeing change as an opportunity. He added that the world needs greater courage and determination to confront global crises.

The event also featured a live performance by a renowned German band, playing anthems of Pakistan, Germany, and the EU. Guests were treated to an exclusive display by the German automobile industry and energetic performances by Lenny Massy and a DJ, adding a festive touch to the celebrations.
