Pakistan’s javelin thrower Muhammad Yasir Sultan clinched the bronze medal at the Asian Throwing Championship in South Korea on Friday, producing a season-best throw of 77.43 metres.
The 27-year-old left his best for the last, recording the mark on his sixth and final attempt to surpass his previous season-best of 76.07m, which he had set at the Asian Athletics Championships in May.
Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Rumesh Tharanga won gold with a throw of 82.05m, the only effort to cross the 80m mark, while Japan’s Gen Naganuma secured silver with 78.60m.
Yasir, Pakistan’s lone representative at the event, was accompanied by national coach Fayyaz Bukhari.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem did not feature in the competition. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation following calf surgery in Cambridge last month and will also miss the upcoming Diamond League events in Poland and Switzerland.
Arshad rose to global prominence last year after breaking the Olympic javelin record with a throw of 92.97m in Paris to win Pakistan’s first-ever athletics gold.
