ISLAMABAD: Experts Saturday stressed the need for investments in modern technologies to optimize wheat crop yield by using quality seeds and timely application of effective weedicides.
A group of agricultural experts shared with the media about the impact of climate change on crops in Pakistan here on Saturday.
According to Khan Faraz, an expert, Pakistan is vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Erratic rainfall, rising temperatures and water scarcity are constant threats to the agriculture sector. The challenges can be turned into opportunities, but that requires an informed and consistent approach on a national scale. It may be added that the wheat crop is highly sensitive to high temperatures. Rising temperatures projected, many studies have forecasted a decline in wheat production across the world, he said.
He quoted that the example of rice and maize are before Pakistani farmers. The government no longer controls the markets and the farmers have made significant investments in the application of modern technologies. That wheat yield can be optimized by using quality seeds treated with fungicides, timely sowing, using drill instead of broadcasting, timely application of effective weedicides and preventing harvesting operation losses through obsolete harvesters.
