Once the hearing commenced on Thursday morning, Sharif and Maryam requested Judge Muhammad Bashir to exempt them owing to Sharif's health. The judge accepted their request while asking Captain (retd) Safdar, son-in-law of Sharif, to remain in court, local media reported. This is the third time this month that Sharif has been granted exemption from court proceedings.

Head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), Wajid Zia, is expected to appear today along with the original JIT report regarding the investigation into the Sharif's family's offshore accounts as revealed by the Panama Papers from the Supreme Court (SC).

Speaking to the media outside the accountability court, Sharif said that he wants to see Pakistan Peoples Party's Raza Rabbani as the next Senate chairman. He said that Rabbani was a man of integrity and it was his personal wish to see him as the Senate chairman.
