ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted bail to more than 120 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers who were arrested during the November 26, 2024 protest.
A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, on Thursday, heard their petitions and while accepting them, ordered their immediate release. The court set bail at Rs 20,000, requiring each individual to submit one surety.
The court directed them to submit an affidavit at their respective police stations, pledging that they would not engage in similar actions in the future.
Ali Bukhari, Babar Awan, and Murtaza Tori represented the petitioners.
The PTI workers were arrested in connection with protests held on November 26, 2024, which led to a government crackdown.
Last month, mercy petitions submitted by 19 individuals convicted for their involvement in the May 9 protests were approved, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had announced in a statement.
Meanwhile, a larger bench of IHC comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq extended stay in a petition filed against the recruitment in the departments of the federal capital from the other provinces.
The bench extended the stay due to non-availability of Attorney General of Pakistan and other amicus curiae and deferred hearing of the case till March 6.
In this matter, the bench had sought the assistance of AGP and the advocate generals of Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, AJK and Islamabad.
The petition was filed by a lawyer Barrister, Yawar Gardezi, seeking declaration against “any quota of any Unit/Province of the Federation, other than the Islamabad Capital Territory, in any and all jobs or posts of any and all departments of the Islamabad Capital Territory.”
Through this writ petition, the petitioner prayed to the court to declare any quota of any Unit/Province of the Federation, other than the Islamabad Capital Territory, in any and all jobs/posts of any and all departments of the Islamabad Capital Territory as illegal and ultra vires to the Constitution and consequently, declare that only holders of an Islamabad domicile are eligible to apply for such jobs/posts.
