ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation increased by 43.79 percent year-on-year basis due to an increase in gas prices (1108.59 percent), wheat flour (62.36 percent) and sugar (58.52 percent), Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The SPI for the week ended on 25th January 2024 decreased by 0.14per cent due to a decline in the prices of tomatoes (14.14per cent), potatoes (5.06per cent), onions (1.64per cent), tea Lipton (1.19per cent), bananas (0.81per cent), pulse gram (0.33per cent), garlic (0.26per cent), and mustard oil (0.17per cent).

The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 43.79per cent mainly due to increase in the prices of gas charges (1108.59per cent), tomatoes (133.36 per cent, cigarettes (93.22per cent), chilies powder (81.74 per cent), wheat flour (62.36per cent), sugar (58.52per cent), gents sponge chappal (58.05 per cent), garlic (54.66per cent), gents sandal (53.37 per cent), gur (52.29per cent), eggs (46.80per cent) and rice irri-6/9 (43.48per cent) while a decrease is observed in the prices of onions (8.64per cent), mustard oil (7.51per cent), bananas (6.52per cent), and vegetable ghee 1kg (1.33per cent).

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 15 (29.41per cent) items increased, 13 (25.49per cent) items decreased and 23 (45.10per cent) items remained stable.

The SPI for the week under review was recorded at 318.55 points against 319.66 points registered in the previous week, according to the PBS data released on Friday.

The SPI for the consumption group up to Rs17,732 and Rs17,732-Rs22,888, Rs22,889 Rs29,517,Rs29,518-Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 decreased by 0.33 per cent, 0.29 per cent, 0.21per cent, 0.17per cent and 0.08per cent respectively.

The items prices of which increased during the period review include chicken (3.31per cent), cooked daal(1.32per cent), gur (0.98per cent), tea prepared (0.92per cent), pulse moong (0.80per cent), energy saver (0.54per cent), maash (0.43per cent), eggs (0.43per cent), LPG (0.28per cent), beef with bone (0.25per cent), wheat flour bag 20kg (0.16per cent), mutton (0.13per cent), milk fresh (0.11per cent), rice basmati broken (0.10per cent), and firewood whole 40kg (0.03per cent).
