With supply shortages and unsustainable average cost of gas, the government is going to withdraw subsidised gas rates of $6.5 per unit for the industrial sector as first part of a three-phased tariff rationalisation plan.

According to the officials of Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) had already moved a summary to the federal cabinet for ending subsidised gas supply to the industrial sector, including captive power plants, immediately. He said a meeting of the cabinet scheduled for Tuesday (tomorrow) is expected to take up the summary for a decision given urgency of the matter.

India's cotton production in 2021-22 season is likely to be 360.13 lakh bales of 170 kg each (equivalent to 382.64 lakh running bales of 160 kg each), which is more by 7.13 lakh bales than the previous season's crop of 353 lakh bales, the Cotton Association of India (CAI) has said in its first estimate for the new season beginning October 1, 2021.

The CAI has adopted state-wise loose cotton production figures as per the report of 'Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textile Management on Survey of Loose Cotton Production & Consumption in India'. As per this survey report, the loose cotton production figures for the 2020-21 crop year were less by 25 per cent at 5.45 lakh bales of 170 kg each, since the said crop year was a pandemic year.

The preliminary yearly Balance Sheet projected by the CAI Crop Committee estimates total cotton supply till end of the 2021-22 Season i.e. upto September 30, 2022 at 445.13 lakh bales of 170 kg each, which consists of the opening stock of 75.00 lakh bales at the beginning of the season, crop for the season estimated at 360.13 lakh bales, and imports for the season estimated at the same level as in the last year i.e. at 10 lakh bales. Domestic consumption for the 2021-22 crop year is estimated by the CAI at the same level as in the last year i.e. at 335.00 lakh bales. The exports of cotton season 2021-22 estimated by the CAI are 48.00 lakh bales as against 78 lakh bales estimated for 2020-21. The carry over stock estimated at the end of the season on September 30, 2022 is 62.13 lakh bales.
