ISLAMABAD: Remaining 61 kilometre section of the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) has been completed and the project would be formally inaugurated very soon, an official of National highway Authority (NHA) told APP on Friday.

The project was launched on Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) mode in 2015, he said adding that under the agreement, 136 km long 4-lane expressway has been converted into 6-lane motorway.

He said two-lane service roads on either side of the motorway are also constructed to facilitate the people of the adjoining areas. In addition, 8 interchanges, 11 weigh stations and 2 service areas are also part of the project,he said.

The motorway will not only reduce distance and travel time but also minimize the frequency of accidents along this very important section. It will contribute immensely to the economy of the country by accelerating commercial and trade activities,he said.

It is worth a mention a 75-kilometre section of the 136 kilometres Karachi-Hyderabad motorway was opened for traffic in February last year while construction on the up gradation of the highway began in March 2015.

The contract of the motorway was given to Frontier Works Organization (FWO) under BOT model, which means that the FWO will construct the motorway from its own funds and then recover its cost by operating it.

After 25 years, the FWO will hand the motorway back to the government. The 136km-long motorway starts from Sohrab Goth at Lyari Expressway and ends at the T-Junction of Jamshoro.
