ISLAMABAD: Customs Region (North) of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected customs duty of Rs 15.12 billion during July-Feb (2020-21) against the assigned target of Rs 12.84 billion, reflecting an increase of 18 percent.

According to the latest data compiled by the FBR here on Thursday, under the head of customs duty, the Region collected Rs 1,653 million during February, 2021 against the monthly target of Rs 1,186 million, surpassing the monthly target by a hefty margin of Rs 467 million (39 percent).

Against the assigned target of Rs 12,841 million, Customs Region (North) collected an amount of Rs 15,127 million as customs duty during the first eight months of the current financial year, showing a surplus of Rs 2,286 million (18 percent) over and above the assigned target.

In other taxes, an amount of Rs 1,453 million was collected under the head of sales tax whereas Rs3,656 million was collected as overall duty/taxes during the month by the region. The Region has so far been able to collect a total of Rs 36,412 million as duty/ taxes during the period July 2020–Feb 2021.

It is pertinent to mention that in spite of continuous closure of Pak-China Border (Border Customs Station, Sust) due to Covid-19 pandemic, other Collectorates of the region i.e., MCC Islamabad; MCC Appraisement & Facilitation), Peshawar performed exceptionally well enabling the region to achieve the overall revenue target of the Region, also covering Rs 2,025 million as the customs duty target, assigned to MCC Gilgit-Baltistan for July 2020–Feb 2021.

Customs Region (North) comprises four Collectorates i.e., Model Customs Collectorates of Islamabad, MCC Gilgit-Baltistan, MCC (Appraisement & Facilitation), Peshawar and MCC (Enforcement & Compliance), Peshawar covering Islamabad/ Rawalpindi, the whole of KP as well as the merged districts of erstwhile FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan.

On the counter-smuggling side, keeping up with the vision of Prime Minister of Pakistan to curb the menace of smuggling, the Customs Region (North) seized goods worth Rs 343 million during February, 2021. Moreover, the region has been able to seize goods worth Rs 3,576 million during July, 2020 to February, 2021 which include NDP Vehicles, dry/ fresh fruits, narcotics, foreign origin fabric, tyres, electronics, cigarettes and other miscellaneous commodities.

It is worth mentioning that under the instructions of Prime Minister, a countrywide operation against sale of illegal POL was launched under the supervision of Tariq Huda, Member Customs (Operations). As a result, Customs Region (North) sealed 329 petrol pumps, seizing 0.972 million liters of Petrol (worth Rs 109 million) & 0.993 million liters of diesel (worth Rs 115 million), in its jurisdiction. Moreover, 224 FIRs were lodged and criminal proceedings have been initiated against the sealed POL outlets, involved in sale of illegal/ smuggled petroleum products.
