Appeal filed in Zainab murder case

LAHORE: Imran Ali, convicted in Zainab murder case, on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court challenging his conviction by an anti-terrorism court.

The appeal was filed by Kot Lakhpat Jail authorities on behalf of the convict. The court was requested to set aside the sentence as legal requirements were not fulfilled by the trial court, through the appeal.

On February 17, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) had handed down death sentence on four counts to Imran Ali in rape and murder case of seven-year-old Zainab. The court handed down the sentence on charges of murder, rape, kidnapping and terrorism.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3.2 million on the convict besides sentencing him to seven years and life term on charges of desecrating the body and unnatural act, respectively. ATC-I Judge Sajjad Ahmad held the trial proceedings at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

It is pertinent to mention here that the convict also confessed to his crime during the trial.
