KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday sought a road map from the provincial government for resolution of civic problems in Karachi and summoned the local government secretary in this regard.

A division bench of the SHC, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, heard a petition seeking an investigation into the collapse of civic infrastructure in the metropolis due to torrential rains and compensation for the people who had been affected by urban flooding.

The bench directed the secretary of local government to appear in personal capacity to explain the situation and summoned a road map from the government to remedy the issues faced by the port city on a permanent basis.

During the hearing, Justice Mazhar remarked that gutters were overflowing in the city while roads were in a dilapidated condition. Can anybody not see Karachi’s abysmal state of affairs? he asked adding that can’t the KMC and DMCs carpet the damaged roads.

What steps are being taken to resolve the civic issues? he asked the additional secretary of the relief department, to which the latter replied that the provincial government in cooperation with the Centre would soon begin work on the Rs1,100 billion uplift package, and that all schemes part of it would see the light of day in three to four years.
