SPI down 0.14 percent WoW

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended August 27, 2020, recorded a decrease of 0.14 percent over last week due to a fall in prices of food items, ie, chicken (6.44 percent), bananas (1.42 percent), sugar (one percent), and non-food item - LPG (1.8 percent).

According to the latest data, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the SPI went down from 135.22 points during the week ended August 20, 2020 to 135.03 points during the week under review.

The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 8.39 percent with most of the items increased, such as chilli powder (86.67 percent, potatoes (71.32 percent), moong (33.45 percent), mash (31.55 percent), masoor (25.20 percent), sugar (24.77 percent), tomatoes (23.07 percent), eggs (21.61 percent), bread (19.22 percent), long cloth Gul Ahmed (17.35 percent, vegetable ghee 1kg (17.29 percent), wheat flour bag (16.82 percent), gur (16.55 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (15.69 percent), and rice (15.45 percent), while a major decrease was observed in the price of chicken (31.06 percent), onions (29.79 percent), diesel (19.49 percent), petrol (11.76 percent), garlic (8.94 percent), and LPG (1.60 percent).

The weekly SPI covers 17 urban centers and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups. During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 12 (23.52 percent) items increased, 11 (21.56 percent) items decreased, and 28 (54.90 percent) items remained constant, according to provisional figures released by the PBS.

The SPI for the consumption groups up to Rs17,733, from Rs17,733 to Rs22,888, Rs22,889 to Rs29,517, Rs29518 to Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month decreased by 0.08 percent, 0.12 percent, 0.13 percent, 0.15 percent, and 0.14 percent respectively.

The commodities, which recorded increase in their average price include tomatoes (4.93 percent), onions (3.57 percent), masoor (1.50 percent), rice irri-6/9 (0.76), gur (0.63 percent), potatoes (0.32 percent), gram (0.26 percent), mash (0.16 percent), cooking oil (0.12 percent), moong (0.11 percent), powdered milk (0.04 percent), and beef with bone (0.03 percent).

The commodities, which recorded decrease in their average price include chicken (6.44 percent), LPG (1.80 percent), bananas (1.42 percent), sugar (one percent), garlic (0.93 percent), eggs (0.49 percent), wheat flour (0.42 percent), vegetable ghee (0.28 percent), curd (0.22 percent), and milk fresh (0.12 percent).

Prices of the commodities that observed no change during the week under review include rice basmati broken, bread plain, mutton, mustard oil, salt powdered, chilies powder, tea, cooked beef, cooked daal, tea prepared, cigarettes, long cloth 57" Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, shirting, lawn printed Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, Georgette, gents sandal, gents sponge chappal, ladies sandal, electricity charges, gas charges, firewood whole, energy saver, Sufi washing soap, match box, petrol super, hi-speed diesel, telephone call charges, and toilet soap.
