Previous govts failed to address issues facing power sector, says Ayub

(Karachi) Minister for Power Omar Ayub has said the previous governments did not focus on addressing issues of power sector that affected its operations.

Addressing a news conference along with Special Assistant on Power Shahzad Qasim in Islamabad on Monday, the minister said that the agreement signed with the Independent Power Producers will lead to reducing cost of power generation and improve electricity distribution system in the country.

He maintained the agreement will also promote industrial sector. "The government will introduce reforms in energy sector enabling Pakistan to generate 70 percent energy through indigenous resources," he added.

Ayub pointed out these reforms will be unfolded before the public within three weeks. He said the government plans to promote renewable and alternative energy.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the government inked a new agreement with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) which will help in bringing down cost of power generation and reduce circular debt.

He said the government's next move will be to bring reform in power distribution sector.
