India imposes curfew in several areas of IoK ahead of revocation anniversary

Ahead of the first anniversary of India's decision to strip off the special status granted to Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK), the Narendra Modi led government has imposed curfew in several areas of the valley.

According to Indian media, the Srinagar administration has enforced the curfew till tomorrow. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, a civil administrator, said the security lockdown was imposed in view of information about protests planned by anti-India groups to mark August 5 as a 'black day'.

Paramilitary soldiers and police went to people’s homes warning them to stay indoors. Steel barricades and laid razor wire across roads, bridges and intersections have also been erected.

The coronavirus related restrictions imposed from July 31 till August 5 have now been extended till August 8.

Last year on August 5, India revoked Article 370 from its constitution which granted special autonomy to IoK paving way for Indians to have the right to acquire property and settle there permanently.

India also detained several political leaders, many of who are still under house arrest, including former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. It also imposed a curfew with a harsh security clampdown in Kashmir for months. Though it eased some restrictions, the life of the Kashmiris remains hard.
