Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers' Association (PVMA) on Thursday threatened to stage sit-in in front of Parliament's House if their demands were not accepted. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Abdul Wahid Sheikh, Chairman PVMA, said that the government did not take any measures to provide security to the consignments of edible oil in the wake of burning of four National Logistics Cell (NLC) containers, which were carrying consignments of edible oil.
"If appropriate security measures were not taken by the government then the Association would go for a sit-in in front of the Parliament's House," he added The ghee and cooking oil millers are already on strike since February 18 and seeking security against the transporters' 'mafia.'
PVMA Chairman said, "The Stocks of ghee and cooking oil have dried up in the market and only retailers have stock to meet only two to three-day requirements." He further said that despite payment of Rs 60 billion direct tax every year, it was very unfortunate that 50,000 families associated with PVMA would go unemployed due to closure of cooking oil and ghee mills.
He revealed that PVMA had suspended orders of oil from Malaysia. "We have asked Malaysia to stop shipments of oil because we do not want to be defaulter," Sheikh added. Senator Ilyas Bilour during the media briefing said that transporters were involved in all types of blackmailing. The ghee industry representatives had a meeting with Interior Minister Rehman Malik 15 days ago. But he (Malik) told lie and he is a man what Zulfiqar Mirza had said about him that he never tells the complete truth," Bilour added. "Truck owners are our brothers, but they are creating panic for a province," he said, adding that people from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were setting up ghee mills in Karachi due to transporters' monopoly.
