Foreign Office on Thursday briefed parliamentarians including chairpersons of important standing committees of the National Assembly ahead of a crucial meeting with visiting United States congressional delegation.
Parliamentarians including chairman National Assembly's standing committee on Foreign Affairs Asfandyar Wali Khan, chairperson standing committee on defence Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, chairman standing committee on defence production Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, chairperson standing committee on finance, revenue & planning and development Fauzia Wahab, chairman standing committee on commerce Eng. Khurram Dastagir Khan along with their members as well as members of the Public Accounts committee, would meet visiting US delegation led by David Dreier today (Friday) shere at the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS).
A briefing was given to the parliamentarians by Foreign Office here at the Parliament House. According to sources, Director General (Americas) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sohail Khan, briefed the lawmakers regarding the current status of Pak-US relations in the wake of last year Salala air strike by Nato forces. Foreign Office officials gave a detailed in-camera briefing on each aspect of Pakistan's relations with the US particularly the current stance following a resolution moved in the US House of Representatives by congressman Dana Rohrabacher, seeking an right to self-determination for the people of Balochistan, the move which invited sharp reaction from Islamabad. The meeting of US congressional delegation with Pakistani parliaments is taking place at a time, when Islamabad is in the process of getting parliamentary approval of the new terms of engagements with Washington.
Besides, discussing other issues, the sources said that the parliamentarians would convey serious concerns of the people of Pakistan regarding the controversial resolution in the US House of Representatives to the congressional delegation. Dreier is Chairman House Democracy Partnership and Rules Committee and is expected to discuss with Pakistani parliamentarians the ways to remove the trust deficits between the two countries.
