5.6 million die every year due to tobacco

Every year 5.6 million people died in the world due to tobacco. This was stated by Tobacco Control cell Hyderabad in a seminar on Monday. Addressing to the seminar, the Hyderabad Press Club President, Jaffar Memon said that tobacco is the second biggest reason of deaths in the world and in Pakistan the death average is 274 daily due to tobacco while 0.1 million people died annually.
Memon said further that public awareness and the role of media can play an important role to stop tobacco. District co-ordinator Tobacco Control Cell Hyderabad, Abdul Gaffar Sherani said tobacco is not only used in the form of cigar but it is also used in the form of Guttca, Huqqa and pan parag etc.
Sherani said that young generation is most affected from tobacco and almost 1,200 our children start smoking under the age of 6 to 15 years, which is an alarming situation. "5000 addicts of tobacco were admitted in hospitals daily and tobacco causes 18 different diseases, which are mouth cancer, cardiology etc", he added. He said district implementation committee has been get effective in District Hyderabad and different programmes were organised for the awareness of anti-Tobacco in education sector, traffic police, transportes and NGos.
