On the sixth anniversary of Margalla Towers collapse caused by the earthquake of October 8, 2005, the residents of Islamabad gathered on Saturday to commemorate those who lost their lives. Two blocks of Margalla Towers, each comprising 10 storeys and 60 apartments, collapsed due to earthquake of 2005 that claimed 72 precious lives. The 'Tower' could not be rebuilt after the passage of six years.
People from different walks of life attended the memorial ceremony. They laid floral wreaths on the monument. People on the occasion observed one-minute silence to pay homage to the victims. People at the ceremony said that reminder of nerve-racking event touched their hearts with sad feelings about the loss of precious lives. The families of affected people said that the government should give them relief as they had lost everything. The people said the Capital Development Authority (CDA) should have a proper check on design and construction of large-scale buildings.
At the ceremony Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) saluted the 'martyrs' of Margalla Towers. While talking to Business Recorder the Zonal Head of MQM said that inquiry commission should be formed to probe the disastrous happening and the responsible people should not be spared at any cost. He said that CDA should review the 'building code' and verification system. CDA should make sure that all the high rise buildings should be structurally strong and earthquake-resistant, he added.
