The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Sindh is now investigating scam amounting to over Rs 150 million in the education department, said a press release issued by NAB Sindh on Friday.
As per details, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided loan of Rs 1260 million to the Government of Pakistan in 2006 for revitalising the existing teacher training institutions and their programmes to improve the quality of Primary and Middle education in Sindh under the Canadian Debt Swap Assistance Programme.
To carry out the activities of CIDA project, Naimatullah Sheikh was appointed as the Project Director in 2006. According to the report, the Project Director, while misusing his authority and through corrupt practices, embezzled more than Rs 150 million on account of purchase of computers, air conditioners, water coolers, stationery and other printing materials. The stationary was purchased for Rs 45 million by violating PPRA rules without calling tenders through quotation from the fictitious firms, which physically do not exist.
It was the responsibility of Project Director to ensure transparency in execution of work, to follow PPRA rules and release of huge payments to the parties after verification, the press release further said adding that Naimatullah Sheikh, the then Project Director CIDA is accused of misusing authority and corrupt practices in procurement of material and issuance of work orders to fictitious/fake firms/companies to gain personal benefits.
