A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued notices in a constitutional petition challenging packaging of cooking oil and ghee. The petitioner alleged the owners of the Oil and Ghee Mills of compromising the health of consumers by using used tin packings.
The petition was filed by a common citizen citing Federal Secretary Science and Technology, Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQA), Chief Secretary Sindh, Secretary Health and Pakistan Medical Association (PMA). The petitioner Imran Shehzad, naming different ghee and vegetable oil manufacturers in his petition, maintained that substandard packing material is being used to earn extra money at the cost of public health.
He maintained that ministry of Industries, Production issued office memorandum placing a ban on re-use of Oil and Ghee canisters/tins for repacking of ghee, cooking oil and other edible items, a practice hazardous for human health and cause multiple deadly diseases. He prayed to the court to direct the respondent ministries and secretaries to place ban on reuse of canisters/tins in Sindh also as was done in the province of Punjab.
