Floods damage crops over 11,737 acres of area in Balochistan

The recent floods in Balochistan damaged 11,737 acres of cropped area and caused 23 casualties with 77,497 people affected in seven districts of the province. Around 34,400 people were affected in Naseerabad district. In Jaferabad 14,089 people while in Kila Abdullah 10,000 people lost their homes and livelihood.
A National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) document available with Business Recorder revealed that the recent monsoon floods had affected orchards over 88,959 acres of land in Balochistan. The document maintains that preparations for monsoon contingency plan commenced in January 2011. A technical committee was constituted with bottom up approach for consultation with Provincial and District authorities. The contingency plan was formulated based on data and weather forecast provide by Pakistan Meteorological Department.
The first spell of monsoon rains hit the province on August 10 and continued till August 15, the second spell from 22-26 August and third spell from 29-14 September 2011. The document reveals that the scale of the disaster in Sindh was significantly greater that is why media attention as well as government attention focused on Sindh. The monsoon rains in Sindh damaged 1.9 million acres causing 352 causalities in the province. The total population affected in Sindh is 8.07 million.
Out of 8.07 million, 651 people got injured; 1.35 million houses have been affected while 2,792 Relief Camps have been set up in the province for flood victims. NDMA document shows that 23 districts of Sindh have been affected while 1.02 million people in Badin, 0.92 million in Khairpur and 0.904 million people in Sanghar have been affected.
