IAPH elects Nasreen Haque as member of executive body

Members of the Board of International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), the Tokyo based organisation unilaterally representing the World Port Industry and protecting the interest of global ports, unanimously chose Nasreen Haque, Chairperson KPT to serve as member of its executive committee.
The IAPH founded in 1955, is a celebrated alliance of global ports representing some 230 ports spread over about 90 countries. The member ports handle well over 60 percent of the world's sea-borne trade and nearly 80 percent of international container traffic.
Haque, while accepting this singular honour, thanked IAPH for the trust reposed in her and emphasised on projecting Pakistani ports in international arena. She vouched for fostering close relations and co-operation between all ports with a view to share opinion and experience in their important field of endeavour thereby improving port management and operations that are vital to the current global economy.
The Chairperson KPT is of the view that one of the major challenges facing Karachi Port is sustainable growth of increased throughput on existing grounds in the proximity of a densely populated urban area. She identified three main pillars for redevelopment to meet this challenge; firstly, provision of suitable infrastructure for port users aimed at smart and sustainable redevelopment of reclaimed space; secondly, availability of information technology to support and ensure smooth and safe handling of shipping including efficient technologies for the accompanying administrative processes and thirdly stimulation and facilitation of modal shift in the logistic chain to enhance the accessibility of all kinds of cargo in multipurpose Karachi port.
She emphasised that the proposed actions will open possibilities of new and advancing technology in improving port efficiency that will enable KPT to formulate prudent, practical and farsighted planning necessary for ushering in commercial viability, investment certainty and integration with the strategic needs of the city and the nation. She stressed that the maritime industry needs to be regulated internationally and that IAPH is the vehicle for doing so.-PR
