Gold eked out a fourth day of gains on Wednesday, paring an earlier push toward a record high after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke offered no hope for a more prolonged period of monetary support, boosting the dollar. US August gold futures settled up $7 at $1,553.40 an ounce. Volume was less than 130,000 lots, about 40 percent below its 30-day average, consistent with weaker recent trading activity.
Spot gold was last up 0.2 percent at $1,549.56 by 3:41 pm EDT (1941 GMT), after rising to $1,557.75, the highest since May 2, when bullion struck a lifetime high of $1,575.79. Silver was also up 0.6 percent at $36.51 an ounce. Gold's gains lifted the platinum group metals off their session lows, with platinum up 0.2 percent at $1,747 an ounce, while palladium was down 0.1 percent at $763.47.
