Three games at the current Gold Cup tournament in the United States are under match-fixing investigation, German magazine Der Spiegel reported on its website on Saturday. Spiegel Online said the regional confederation CONCACAF, the world governing body FIFA and Interpol are looking into suspicious betting patters in Asia around the - not identified - games.
The Gold Cup is the championship of teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean. It is played June 5-25 in the US. Spiegel Online said that big sums were bet in Asia on multi-goal wins - with two of the probed games ending 5-0 and another 4-0.
Mexico defeated Cuba and El Salvador 5-0 and Cuba lost with the same result against Costa Rica. Mexico and Guatemala both got 4-0 victories against Grenanda. Football has been plagued by fixing affairs in recent months. A large number of Italian games are under investigation and first prison sentences were recently spoken out in a German probe on match-fixing in Europe.
