Seoul shares up

Published Updated

Seoul shares edged up 0.5 percent after volatile trade on Wednesday, helped by modest foreign investor buying and rallies in airlines and shipping firms, but rises were limited as continued debt issues in Greece kept investors cautious.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index finished up 0.47 percent at 2,086.53 points. KOSPI 200 September futures ended unchanged at 275.45 points and the KOSPI 200 spot index gained 0.86 points to 274.53. The junior Kosdaq market ended up 0.55 percent at 464.83.
South Korea was among the least favoured markets of Asia Pacific investors, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a note dated June 14, downgrading it to "underweight" from "neutral." Foreign investors were buyers of a modest net 3.35 billion won ($3.1 million) worth of stocks, snapping a four-session selling streak. Shares in Korean Air Line, the country's top air carrier, jumped 3.2 percent and tour agency Hana Tour rallied 2.2 percent. Chungdahm Learning, which operates language institutes, rose 2.2 percent.
Shares in NHN, South Korea's dominant Internet portal and an online game provider, fell 2 percent after its online game site was attacked, heightening concerns about cyber security issues in the country following a wave of hacking attacks on government agencies and financial institutions.
