An official says ferry service has resumed between Sri Lanka and India after being halted 25 years ago because of the island's civil war. Sri Lanka's Shipping Corp director W. Chandradasa says a ferry with a capacity of 1,044 passengers reached Colombo on Tuesday from the southern Indian port of Tuticorin.
The ferries will initially operate twice a week, with the journey lasting about 10 hours each way. A previous ferry service between the two countries was stopped after Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict grew into a full-scale civil war in the 1980s. The war ended in 2009.
