List of the safest vehicles was announced recently, which showed Hyundai leading the way.

Like every year, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released on Thursday a report naming vehicles known for providing the greatest levels of crash protection. Sixty two model year cars of 2018, ranging from small economy cars to large luxury sedans, gained top ratings and won awards. Hyundai, Subaru, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz were amongst the many winners.

Out of all the vehicles, 15 made it for the Top Safety Pick+ award, which is IIHS’ highest designation that acknowledges models offering an advanced safety level. 47 of the vehicles gained the basic Top Safety Pick award.

Hyundai Motor Co., owner of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, lead the way with six of its cars in the top category. Subaru came in second with four of its cars in the top category, whereas, Toyota Motor Corp. had 10, the most number of vehicles, in the second category level.

The requirement for the award categories include a superior rating for front crash prevention, along with having advanced rating in the driver-side small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. To make it to the Top Safety Pick+, vehicles should contain a good rating for its headlights and should be good in the new passenger-side small overlap crash test, wrote Business Insider.

According to IIHS, it created the passenger-side small overlap front crash test ‘after it became clear that some manufacturers weren’t paying sufficient attention to the passenger side as they made improvements to achieve better performance in the driver-side test’.

Forbes listed the 2018 model vehicles that gained IIHS’ top rankings that include:

Small cars: Kia Forte, Kia Soul, Subaru Impreza, and Subaru WRX.
Midsize cars: Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, and Toyota Camry.
Large Luxury: BMW 5 series, Genesis G80 and G90, Lincoln Continental, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Midsize SUVs: Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.
Midsize Luxury SUV: Mercedes-Benz GLC.

“The improvements in occupant protection have been amazing over the past decades. All automakers now recognize the important role of safety in consumer choice, and they are increasingly receptive to working with our engineers to understand the next steps in keeping people from harm in motor vehicle crashes and to make real changes in their vehicle designs,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund.
