Prime suspect in Do Darya shootout sent on physical remand

Published December 4, 2017 Updated December 4, 2017 07:37pm

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Monday remanded a prime suspect in Do Darya shootout case Khawar Hussain Burney in police custody for two days.

The police produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate and sought his 14-day physical remand for interrogation.

The investigating officer said that the absconding accomplices were still at large and the raids were being conducted to nab them as well. He requested the court to grant Burney’s remand as he was required to trace out the whereabouts his partners in crime.

The defence counsel; however, opposed the investigators’ request of physical remand and requested the court to send Burney to jail on judicial remand.

The lawyer representing the accused maintained that the weapon and a vehicle had already been recovered and there was no need for his physical remand.

The state prosecutor said that the case should be heard by anti-terrorism court describing the offense as an act of terrorism. He asked the judge to order incorporation of Anti-Terrorism clauses in the FIR.

The magistrate allowed the investigators to keep the suspect with them on physical remand for two days and directed the police to submit progress report in the next hearing.

Earlier on Sunday, Zafir Fahim who was reportedly on his way to have a breakfast with his friends on a Mercedes had a minor brawl with the suspects who were heading in a double cabin car.

As a result, the suspect opened firing, killing Zafir and injuring his friend near Do Darya.
