For the promotion of any sports, victory in a foremost competition is needed and it is the best opportunity for us to grasp the first-ever gold in the SAFF Championship history, as the circumstances are more favourable for us. This was stated by Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)'s President Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, MNA, while talking with Dhaka-bound Pakistan Probables at Punjab Stadium on Thursday.
The players of Pakistan U-19 team were also present on this occasion who will appear in next month's 36th AFC U-19 Championship (Group-D). He also congratulated Pakistani striker Safiullah for giving new dimension to Pakistan, being leading scorer of third AFC Challenge Cup. While highlighting the magnitude of the South Asia's well-known biennial event that will get underway on 4th December, 2009 at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium, Faisal said that triumph in the Bangladesh event could appear as "Lucky Break' for us and change the fortune of football in the country.
He said, "Pakistan is drawn in tough Group-B, having Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. One of the best teams in South Asian Football would be knocked out of the event from this group before semis. It will be uphill task to face host Bangladesh and ever-improving Sri Lanka while Bhutan is always strong as they showed last year." The Group-A is comprised of Maldives, India, Nepal and Afghanistan.
Faisal pointed out that though the win would not be easy, as all the participating teams must be making great preparations but Pakistan have the potential to secure the victory in the eight-nation tournament if they also prepare solidly for the biennial spectacle.
"Since its inception, the biennial competition has developed into South Asia's premier football tournament, promoting the regional development of the game and providing plenty of exciting action, and wonderful skills for fans to savour in one of the most populous areas of the world," Faisal added.
