 KARACHI: The Agriculture Department, Sindh has fixed minimum price of sugarcane as Rs145 per 40 kilogram for crushing season 2011-12.

According to a handout issued here on Thursday, the Agriculture department in exercise of powers conferred by sub section (ii) of section 16 of Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950 fixed the minimum price of Sugarcane will be Rs154(Rupees in hundred fifty four only) per 40 KG for crushing season 2011-12.

The Government of Sindh has in exercise of powers conferred by sub-section (v) of section 16 of the Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950, directed the Sugar Factories in the province to pay quality premium to the cane growers at the end of the crushing season 2011-12 a the rate of fifty paisa per 40 kg, cane for each 0.1 percent (including fraction thereof to be calculated prorate) of excess sucrose recovery above 8.7 percent determined on over all sucrose recovery basis of each mill.

However, as the matter is pending in the Supreme Court and as per decisions of Federal Government Steering Committee meeting held on July 16, 2007, the quality premium shall remain suspended till decision of the apex court/consensus on uniform formula is developed in MINFA.
