The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys' Association of Pakistan, Karachi, has been actively engaged in educational and cultural activities since its formation in 1948. It has sponsored in 1994 Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, the First Engineering University in Private sector.
It is not like any other institution of higher education, but aims to keep the Aligarh Spirit alive and follow the vision of the great Reformer and Educationist, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.
The University has achieved a commendable position during the short period of its existence. Its most modern and fully equipped labs, highly qualified and dedicated faculty, the guidance and support of its Sponsors, have contributed to make it a Center of Excellence at the National as well as International level. Its programmes are accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council and the Higher Education Commission.
Internationally it has won recognition with its full membership of Association of Commonwealth Universities and UNESCO sponsored International Association of Universities. The degrees of the University are recognised world over. The admissions to the University are allowed strictly on merit, based on Academic Record, Aptitude Test and Interview.
The University grants scholarships and other financial assistance to the deserving students on the basis of merit and need. The University takes great pride in the fact that it follows its Academic Calendar strictly and all the activities are according to Schedule.
The Graduates of the University are awarded Degrees at the University Convocation held every year. The University has successfully held Nine Convocations since 1998. The first Convocation was attended by the Prime Minister of Pakistan as the Chief guest, and subsequent Convocations were graced by the presence of Presidents, Prime Minster & the Governors of Sindh. In the last Convocation, Mr Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Chief Justice of Pakistan, was the Chief Guest.
The University provides excellent facilities to its students for sports, Declamation and Debates and encourages participation in Seminars, Competitions at national and international levels. The success of SSUET team in the Software Competition held by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of USA in 2005 is an indication of the quality of education being disseminated at SSUET. Thus the University puts great emphasis on Co-curricular activities also.
The establishment of an International Research Center, in collaboration with US- based researchers to conduct research in emerging technologies, the strengthening of teaching facilities through "Distance Teaching Programme" using Video Conferencing are the recent improvements at SSUET, indicating the constant endeavour of the University to continue as a Center of Excellence.
The University has a unique system of providing guidance to its students for their future careers through its acclaimed Career Planning & Placement Bureau by arranging on job training and internship besides helping them in securing jobs. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr Shaukat Aziz in his address at the 8th Convocation, greatly appreciated the University's establishment of Career Planning & Placement Bureau and considered it as a model for other Universities to follow.
The University is actively involved in many other activities of importance to the society in general purely as a public service. It has recently proposed Disaster Relief for Earthquake, Rainfall & Flood Relief Emergency Plans, which were widely appreciated. It is presently engaged in setting up links and collaboration with the industry to identify "Employment Oriented Disciplines." The proposal of providing its expertise to the Government as "Think Tank" was warmly welcome by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The University puts great importance on the Quality of Education. It has a system in place to monitor and improve the standard of education it is providing. It plans to set up a Quality Assurance Cell, headed by a senior faculty member to further strengthen its efforts in this direction.
The University, in its endeavour to provide better facilities to the students and the community has recently acquired 200 acres in the Education City. The University plans to set up an I.T Park with the state of the Art facilities. The University is also actively pursuing plans to set up facilities for new and emerging technologies at this site.
