KARACHI: Growing consciousness among people about their health status and realization to take care of it was witnessed here Thursday as hundreds of people, both young and old, were witnessed to avail free of charge medical assessment at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).
The opportunity provided to the general public on the eve of World Kidney Day, observed on every second Thursday of March, also reflected as how obesity has emerged to be a major challenge for the country in the backdrop of the fact that more than 50 percent of the visitors were found to be over weight.
Doctors on the occasion warned them that they may not necessarily be healthy and could be at high risk to develop different health
conditions.
More than 1500 people were registered at the SIUT Reporting Center and went through various medical examination including blood and other pathological investigations besides blood pressure and so- forth.
Qualified dieticians and nutritionists on the occasion also helped many of the visitors, no less than 700, in scheduling their dietary pattern.
On the occasion a panel of health experts also made their respective presentations and responded to queries raised by the people in general alongwith those suffering from kidney disease or related health problems.
Focus of these presentations was on prevention, the risk factors and also how to live with kidney ailment.
World Kidney Day being observed since 2006 has particular theme for each year and the one for 2017 is "obesity."
SIUT has been arranging day long activities to mark the occasion for past more than 10 years at its main premises in Karachi and also at its Primary Healthcare Center in Kathore, a part of rural Karachi.
The prime aim on the part of SIUT was to create awareness in the population about the hazards of kidney diseases and also to provide them facilities on the basis of which they can take precautionary steps or pursue their treatment.
SIUT this year has made special arrangements to hold the day at its Chablani Center in Sukkur on Friday.
