DUNEDIN: New Zealand were 177 for three in reply to South Africa's first innings 308 at stumps on day two of the first Test in Dunedin on Thursday.
Kane Williamson was not out 78, and Jeet Raval had been dismissed for 52.
The South Africa innings ended five overs after lunch with Dean Elgar making 140 while Trent Boult took four for 64 for New Zealand.
