A condolence reference was held here in the memory of late Colonel Shujauddin Butt (Retd) here at the GC University Lahore. The GCU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Aftab said that late Shujauddin Butt was a great cricketer and decent person. He played for Northern India in Ranji Trophy from 1946 to 47 and later played 19 tests for Pakistan between 1954 to 1961.
Talking about his sports strength, Dr Khalid Aftab said he (Colonel Butt) was a gutsy all rounder with a strange jerky bowling action with a big leap to deliver the ball and make up for his height. The leap gave the ball a higher trajectory to ensure his success as a good bowler did.
He stated that Shujauddin's association with the game over half a century as player, selector, manager, administrator, broadcaster and author made him one of the most forthright and dedicated figures in Pakistani cricket.
The vice-chancellor also mentioned his valuable role in the Oval Test of 1954 and his wonderful performance as an opening batsman against M C C "A" team of Australia at Lahore in 1959 to 60.
Talking about Shujauddin's journalistic contribution Professor Dr Khalid Aftab said the late Ravian was the chief editor of the monthly sports events from 1981 to 1983. He regularly contributed to the monthly "the cricketer" and monthly "sports time" and used to write columns in Daily Dawn. After retirement, he settled down in London.
The participants of the reference prayed for the salvation of the departed soul. The participants included Dean of Sciences Dr M A Kashmiri, Dean of Arts Dr Sohail Ahmed Khan, Dr Zaheer Ahmed Siddiqi and the GCU staff.
