Naimatullah Khan would be the joint candidate of opposition parties to contest election of Karachi City Nazim to be held on October 6, 2005, it was announced here on Friday.
Naimatullah, who was elected City Nazim in August 2001 local government elections from Karachi, will contest LG polls 2005 for City Nazim under the banner of Tameer-e-Karachi Ittehad (TKI) - a joint opposition parties platform. PPP backed Awam Dost candidate Saeed Ghani will contest Naib Nazim slot in Karachi.
TKI also adjusted seats for Nazims/Naib Nazims in 18 towns of City District Government Karachi, between Pakistan People's Party (PPP) backed Awam Dost Panel, Al-Khidmat Group, ANP backed Khidmatgar group, PML-N backed Watan Nawaz and Insaan Dost.
"TKI signifies capabilities of opposition parties on common agenda and commitment to fight against dictatorship," Taj Haider, Information Secretary PPP told a joint news conference with Naimatullah Khan and other opposition leaders at Karachi Press Club. He said that candidates who earlier filed nomination papers Ms Fuazia Wahab & Syed Zahid Ali of Awam Dost & Watan Nawaz Panel would retire from contest.
Taj Haider said "government backed candidate for City Nazim (Mustafa Kamal of Haq Parast) lacked support among independent councillors. We hope they will side us."
He claimed opposition parties unity and internal differences between coalition government partners would decide outcome of upcoming elections on October 6, 2005.
Naimatullah alleged that government is trying to scare independent councillors. While thanking opposition parties on choosing him, he vowed he would win and strive for improving living standards of people.
"I am honoured on being nominated as Naib Nazim candidate of opposition parties in Karachi," said Saeed Ghani, who has four years experience as UC Nazim.
