Benazir Bhutto's spokesman Farhatullah Babar on Saturday strongly denied reports that Benazir had given names to President Musharraf for inclusion in the Cabinet, saying that "what you read in papers is disinformation".
Reports have been planted in the media to hide the pressure from the United States to obtain some semblance of democracy in Pakistan, he said, adding that "these reports are absolutely rubbish".
Babar's comment was sought on newspaper reports that the federal Cabinet was being reshuffled mainly to induct some PPP parliamentarians whose names have been supplied by its chairperson, Benazir Bhutto. The present "campaign of disinformation" is the second in the last one year, the earlier being some eight months ago, he said.
Farhat recalled that Washington had sharpened its focus on the need for democracy in countries presently under totalitarian systems, as reflected in the statement of Christina Rocca.
Interestingly, Secretary of State Condoleza Rice last week undertook significant restructuring of her department, putting nuclear non-proliferation and 'a vibrant democracy' as her two principal foreign policy objectives.
