Five patients facing blockade in brain vessels were treated through brain angiography (neuroendo-vascular therapy) at two city hospitals. Tariq Mahmood (27) and Fouzia (27) facing Arterio Venous Malformation (AVM) and Zubaida Begum (60) suffering from carotid artery blockade were treated at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, while Parveen (30) facing Aneurysm and Rizwan (28) suffering from spinal AVM were operated upon at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital.
Led by Dr Shakir Hussain, Honorary Consultant Stroke Neurology and Interventional Neuroradiology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, a team of Pakistani surgeons, neuro-radiologists and neurologists comprising Dr Umair Rashid Chaudhry, Dr Khurram, Dr Waheed and Dr Najam conducted the neuroendovascular therapy of these five cases.
Talking to Business Recorder after the treatment, Dr Shakir said that all the five cases remained 'successful'. He said they are handling such cases through neuro-interventional mode of treatment for the last few years at Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi and treating 15-20 cases very successfully. This mode of treatment is being considered safest due to less mortality rate as compared to brain surgery, he added.
TALENTED SURGEONS: He further said that Pakistan has made good beginning by introducing this mode of treatment. 'Pakistan is blessed with talented surgeons, neuro-radiologists and neurologists, and by providing them conducive atmosphere and encouragement, they can bring miracles in the medical fields,' he said.
He further said that both India and Pakistan could collaborate in medical education and research, which can go a long way for the ailing humanity.
To a question, he said that he would invite Pakistani neurologists and neuro-radiologists for imparting necessary training on neuroendovascular therapy so that they could effectively handle cases of blood blockades in brain vessels.
BIOTECH: Pakistan, which is sole distributors for Boston Scientific Inc, USA, has imported required medical instrument from the US for the treatment of these five cases.
Moreover, 'Ist Neurointervention Workshop', organised by Neuro-radiology and Neurology Department Lahore General Hospital and Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore in collaboration with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, Shaukat Khanum Memorial and BIOTECH Pakistan, concluded here on Monday.
On the concluding day Dr Shakir made a presentation on 'Prospects of Neuro-intervention'. He said: "This is fast growing mode of treatment, which is considered safest the world over."
