The Sindh Government for administrative reasons has carved out three more districts, each having a population of 0.5 million and three tehsils, from the existing district of Hyderabad which had a population of three million. Sindh now has 23 districts. Chief Minister Sindh, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim announced the creation of new districts at a hurriedly called press conference at the Chief Minister House on Monday.
Senior Minister and Minister for Finance, Syed Sardar Ahmed, Adviser to Chief Minister on Local Bodies, Waseem Akhtar, Chief Secretary, Aslam Sanjrani and MPAs belonging to the MQM and PML were also present.
Arbab Rahim said that out of Hyderabad district three more districts have been carved out namely Tando Mohammed Khan, Tando Allahyar and Matiari. Hyderabad would now comprise Hyderabad City, Qasimabad and Latifabad with a total population of around 14,95000 and City District Government Hyderabad would remain intact.
Tando Mohammad Khan would be its own district headquarters with two more tehsils, Bulri Shah karim and Tando Ghulam Ali. Similarly, Tando Allahyar would be its own district headquarters, having two tehsils, Chamber and Chandomari as administrative units. The third district would be Matiari plus Hala and its tehsils would be Matiari, Hala and Saeedabad. Matiari would be the district headquarters.
Each of the new districts would have a population of around 500,000.
The Sindh CM said that the creation of new districts was overdue because of administrative exigencies, adding that "no more new district would now be created. However, in case of pressing need the possibility of this administrative action could be looked into."
Brushing aside all questions that were asked about the pressure of coalition cabinet partners to bifurcate Hyderabad into districts and anger of the local people who did not want division of Hyderabad, Dr Arbab said that they were politicians and in power and in majority and were able to take politically-motivated decisions, but in the instant case the creation of all the three districts was "purely administrative."
When asked about the position of the existing Nazim of Hyderabad, the chief minister said his position would not be affected and added: "local bodies' elections were due and after that new Nazims would take over."
To a question, Dr Arbab Rahim said "those of you who wanted to see administrators instead of Nazims would see them soon."
