The world largest search engine Google is facing criticism from all directions, as its been accused of deleting Palestine from Google Maps. Google has come out on defense saying as Palestine was never on the Maps.
"There has never been a 'Palestine' label on Google Maps," said a spokesman for Google. "However, we discovered a bug that removed the labels for 'West Bank' and 'Gaza Strip'. We're working quickly to get these labels back to the area."
As per Telegraph, Google says that a computer glitch led to the temporary removal of the labels for the West Bank and Gaza, , sparked outrage on social media, with people tweeting under the hashtag #PalestineIsHere.
Palestine, is recognised as a country by the United Nations, however it has never been on Google Maps. Instead of being demarcated with a solid line, which indicates a country border, Google instead defines the Gaza Strip and the West Bank with a dashed border, the symbol used to outline disputed territories, reported The Guardian.
The incident shows that even giants like Google, Apple and Microsoft have to take much care with how they represent regions. Engadget reported, Google uses the services of internal, third-party and public data to create maps, however, much attention should be paid on politically sensitive regions.
