A 27-year old youth from Khanpur suffered from cold in the head and pain in the left side of the nose. After two weeks or so, he also developed drooping of the left eyelid and blurring of the vision of the left side.
After receiving initial treatment, for about one month, locally with little success, his doctor advised him to be taken for specialist treatment in Karachi. His constricted pupil and drooping of the upper eyelid, suggested it to be a case of Horner's syndrome.
His symptoms and X-ray showed para-nasal sinus and enlargement of the left ethimoidal sinuses. His chest and blood C.P. were normal.
To begin with, he was treated at the hospital with depot-cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics and Chymoral. After four days, he showed flickering and gradual reduction in blurring of his vision. To our surprise, he gained full recovery in ten days, as his X-rays taken before his discharge from the hospital, showed reversion of sinuses to normal.
Horner's disease is not very common. There are a group of symptoms in it due to a disorder of the sympathetic nerves in the cervical region.
The syndrome consists of constricted pupil, drooping of the upper eyelid and an absence of sweating over the affected side of the face.
The treatment requires a specialist's attention as its treatment is rather difficult in small towns and clinics.
