At least 130 people were injured when a work train hit the back of a stationary commuter train in a tunnel at New York's Pennsylvania station during the Monday morning rush hour, officials said.
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said a Long Island Rail Road train filled with passengers was waiting for a platform at about 7:10 am EDT (1110 GMT) when an Amtrak work train collided with it.
"The work train hit the passenger train, derailing the locomotive and the second car on the work train," Scoppetta said at a briefing.
"There are about 130 people who have what appear to be minor injuries. Everyone is stable."
The cause of the accident was not immediately known. Scoppetta said the Amtrak train was travelling at a modest 10 mph (16 kph) when it struck the passenger train.
He said most of the people were being treated for neck and back injuries. Scores of people were seen being placed on stretchers and carried onto ambulances to take them to the hospital.
