The district government of Rawalpindi has sent a summary of the initiation of the Ring Road project around Rawalpindi to address the old problem of traffic jams in the city.
It demanded the provision of Rs 7.5 billion for construction of the ring road.
According to the details, the district government had sent a summary, and informed the President, Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Punjab about the need of constructing a ring road at Murree Road to reduce traffic disorder, well placed sources said here on Tuesday.
They said that people, travelling between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, were suffering a lot due to regular traffic jams.
Hours long traffic jam at Committee Chowk, Moti Mahal Chowk and Murree Road had became an order of the day and had caused a lot of mental and physical agony to the general public as well as motorists, they added.
The sources said that immediate measures were necessary to avoid traffic jams on this important road and the district government needed more than Rs 7.5 billion for constructing the ring road project in Pindi.
Under this project, they said, the road from Kutchery Chowk to the airport would also be converted into a six-lane carriageway to solve traffic problems.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Punjab government had released Rs 70 million for the construction of an underpass at Committee Chowk, but so far no work was initiated on this project.
It is pertinent to note that Murree Road, Mureed Hassan Road, Liaquat Bagh till General hospital, College Road, City Saddar Road, Liaquat Road, Iqbal Road, Saidpur Road, Asghar Mall, Muslim Town, Sadiqabad, Guwalmandhi, Raja Bazaar, Adamjee Road, Kashmir Road, Misrial Road, Chohar Chowk, Tench Bhata, Abid Majeed Road, and dozens of other roads, connecting the Cantonment area with other parts of city and suburban areas, are jam-packed with traffic.
