Taiwan's Quanta buys 17 percent of D-Link unit for $32 million

Taiwan's Quanta Computer Inc, the world's top contract maker of laptop computers, said on Thursday it bought a 17-percent stake in the networking equipment unit of D-Link Corp for T$1.06 billion (US $32 million).
Quanta said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange that it purchased 42.5 million common shares of unlisted Alpha Networks Inc at T$25 each in what it described as a long-term investment. No further details were given and officials at Quanta and D-Link, a maker of networking and wireless products, could not be reached for comment.
The announcement came after the close of trade on Thursday, when Quanta shares ended down 1.81 percent at T$81.50, under-performing a slim 0.06 percent rise on the main TAIEX market.
D-Link closed down 0.24 percent at T$41.20.
Quanta makes notebook computers for the world's two biggest computer vendors Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc. It recently diversified into higher-margin cellphone manufacturing to survive the stiff competition in the contract manufacturing industry.
