The construction work on the two new underpasses along the Lahore Canal will commence from March 15.
This was stated by the Provincial Communication and Development Minister Chaudhry Zaheerudin Khan at a news conference held at the Board of Revenue Committee room on Thursday.
He said under the directives of the Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, his department has already completed two such projects during the last six months on the Mall Road and the FC College.
The new underpasses are being constructed on the Shaukat Ali canal crossing near the Jinnah Hospital and the Doctor's Hospital-Johar Town crossing and each will cost Rs 190 million.
The provincial communication secretary Sibtain Fazal Haleem who was also present at the news briefing told the newsmen that because these underway passes will be on single side of the canal instead of parallel sides, hence their cost is lower as compared to those already constructed.
Speaking about the other projects in the pipeline, the minister mentioned construction of underpass at Committee Chowk, Rawalpindi and a flyover at Jhal Khanwana, Faisalabad.
He said the PC-1 of these projects has been completed and forwarded to the Department of Planning and Development.
About the proposed ring road project in Lahore, Chaudhry Zaheerudin Khan said NESPAK has been entrusted the task of studying the alignment of the road and once all the formalities are completed, the report will be send to the concerned department for approval.
The proposed ring road will have six-lane expressway to facilitate high-speed traffic, connecting to the motorway and roads leading out of the city. Another scheme on the anvil is the reengineering of the Shahrah-i-Quaid-i-Azam to upgrade and renovate the premier road of the city.
The minister further stated that additional underpasses will be constructed at the Kalima Chowk and Azadi Chowk (near Minar-i-Pakistan). "Both these projects are in the planning and designing stages," he stated.
