MILAN: Italian shares jumped by more than four percent on Tuesday in line with other stock markets on investor hopes that officials will finally agree measures to limit the spread of Europe's sovereign debt crisis.
The benchmark FTSE Mib index was up 3.69 percent at 14,639 points at around 1140 GMT with bank shares leading the rally. UBI Banca rose 6.38 percent and Intesa Sanpaolo was up 5.94 percent.
Energy giant Enel was also doing well, gaining 5.63 percent.
Investors said they were hopeful over European efforts to stop contagion by boosting a fund to help eurozone countries experiencing financing difficulties.
