TAIPEI: Taiwan stocks opened up 2.24 percent on Tuesday, with Compal jumping 3.39 percent after announcing a joint venture plan with the world's No.3 PC brand Lenovo to manufacture computers.
The main TAIEX index rose 154.01 points to 7,031.13, lifted by defensive plays such as department stores and cement counters . It had ended down 2.4 percent in the previous session.
Apple Inc's suppliers rebounded from Monday's heavy losses, with touch panel maker TPK Holding up 4.32 percent and touchscreen panel maker Wintek up 4.92 percent.
Mediatek surged 6.05 percent after report that it received rush orders for Lenovo's new smartphone before China's national holidays in October.
The Taiwan dollar was flat at T$30.549.
Foreign investors were net sellers on Monday, bringing their total selling to T$85.097 billion this month.
