TOKYO: Tokyo stocks closed 1.61 percent lower on Tuesday as investors fretted over Europe's stability after a major ratings agency downgraded Italy's sovereign debt.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 142.92 points to 8,721.24. The Topix index of all first-section issues lost 1.70 percent or 13.09 points to 755.04.
