British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has apologized after describing black people as 'colored' on US television. Benedict Cumberbatch has highlighted a very important issue within the entertainment industry and within society.
According to foreign media reports, British actor came under criticism after using the racial term during a debate on the lack of diversity on British screens on the PBS talk show Tavis Smiley last Wednesday. Benedict was discussing his view on diversity in roles and said, “I think as far as colored actors go, it gets really different in the U.K., and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in the U.S.] than in the U.K and that’s something that needs to change”.
After realizing what he said to the Black people, he said, “I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive, and I feel complete fool I am and I am sorry to have offended people. And to learn from my mistakes in such a public manner please be assured I have,” foreign media reported.
“I apologize again to anyone who I offended for this thoughtless use of inappropriate language about an issue which affects friends of mine and which I care about deeply”, Cumberbatch added.
Cumberbatch has been nominated for Oscars for ‘The Imitation Game’. ‘The Imitation Game’ has also been nominated for four British Independent Film Awards including Best British Independent Film, Best Screenplay for Graham Moore, Best Actress for Keira Knightley and Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch.
