KIEV: Hungary resumed gas supplies to Ukraine on Saturday after an almost three-month pause, Ukrainian gas transport monopoly Ukrtransgaz said.
"The flow resumed today at 11.00 (0900 GMT)," Ukrtransgaz said in a statement. Ukraine will receive 2.7 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas from Hungary every day, it added.
Ukraine, which began to import large volumes of gas from Europe in 2014, received a total of 600 mcm of Hungarian gas last year. Hungary suspended gas shipments to Ukraine on Sept. 25, saying that it needed its pipeline capacities for increased gas imports as it was filling up its storages for the winter.
Ukraine, which is trying to find alternative energy sources to Russian gas, imported more than 5 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas from Europe, mostly from Slovakia, in 2014.
Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement, brokered by the European Commission, at the end of October to cover gas supplies over the winter months as a temporary solution to a long-standing price dispute between Moscow and Kiev.
Ukraine and the West accuse the Kremlin of helping pro-Russian separatists who launched a rebellion in eastern Ukraine a month after Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula in March.
The former Soviet republic consumes about 50 bcm of gas per year while its local production slightly exceeds 20 bcm.
