imageKARACHI: The feasibility report of K-4 project, worth Rs 25.5 billion, conceived to provide 260 MGD water in its first phase to Karachi must be completed within a week so that necessary measure could be taken to initiate the project.

These directives were issued by Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon to the consultant of the K-4 project M/s Usman and Co while presiding a high level meeting on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister's Finance Advisor Syed Murad Ali Shah, Project Director K-4 Misbahudin and other senior officers associated with finance, planning & development as well as local government departments.

The Dean of NED University Prof Sarosh Hashmat Lodhi also attended the meeting.

The consultant of the project briefing the meeting said that the original project, K-4 was aimed at providing 520 MGD water to Karachi in 2nd phases.

In the first phase 124 kilometres long canal would be constructed from Keenjhar to Karachi via Jung Shahi to provide water to the city, he said.

Sindh Chief Minister's Finance Advisor, Syed Murad Ali Shah directed the consultant to develop shortest possible canal route so that the cost of the project could be rationalised.

On this the consultant said that the route of the canal was planned after comprehensive consultation and survey.

Local Government and Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, also the Chairman of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) said that the project was already facing unnecessary delay.

"PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has given clear instructions to start the project at the earliest," he said adding that "I want you to complete feasibility within a week so that further action can be taken."

The Local Government Minister said that the project had been conceived to meet water needs of the city for next 30 to 40 years with due consideration towards its population growth rate.

"The project would be good enough to meet future water requirements of the Karachiites and accordingly drainage system would also be developed, he said on the occasion.
